Wheel Counting

ContentAutomatic Mode

  • Wheel Counting

How it works

Routes are from left to right.
0enter, 1enter and 2enter are wheel counter sensor types.

  1. The train starts in block 0 with an unknown wheel count.
  2. Entering block 1, on the wheel counting sensor 1enter, will count all wheels of the consist.
  3. Because block 0 does not have any information of the number of wheels it cannot be compared with block 1.
  4. Entering block 2, on the wheel counting sensor 2enter, will count all wheels of the consist.
  5. Block 1 will be set free at the "in" event if the wheel count is equal to the number counted in block 2.
An exception is thrown if the counts does not match so block 1 and route 1→2 will not be set free.

Note:
The previous block will be set free at the "enter" event if:
1. Sensors: set-up as "wheel counter", in the free@enter-block and in the previous block. Sensor: Select type "6"
2. Loco and Block: free@enter is active

3. Train: (at least) Loco and (typically) last-car-in-train are equipped with a magnet.

Reset

Blocks will reset its own wheel counter at the IN event.
Rocview supplies a popup menu item to reset the event manually.

Sensor setup

The enter sensor is the only one suited for being a wheel counter and must be set to the Wheel counter (Type 6).
In a Block with two sensors (enter/in), with their function switched according to the direction of block use, both sensors can be configured as wheel counter to enable wheel counting in both directions. The wheel counting takes only place with the sensor that is defined in the active route for the enter event.

Sensor simulation

If the connected CS supports sensor simulation it will increase the wheel count by one every time its state gets high.

Hardware

Delays for OFF messages must be deactivated in the modules of the Feedback systems and in Sensor objects so that axes or magnets can be reliably detected even when the distance is short.

Setting of the ports of feedback modules
and sensor objects for wheel counting
LocoIO / GCA50 / GCA500 Input
CAN-GC2 IN
GCA-Pi02 Delay = 0
WIO Configuration = i
Sensor objects Timer = 0
Type = 6 (Wheel counter)

Physical versions of suitable feedback devices

  1. Reed contacts or Hall sensors and triggering magnets in suitable places on the vehicles.
  2. Track sections that are short enough to recognize an occupancy by individual axles.
  3. Light barriers that can detect vehicles, axles or wheels individually.
