The impact of block types and train types

By a careful selection of the train and block types realistic processes can take place on the layout even without the use of timetables. Thus, for example in large mainline stations regional trains preferably stop at certain platforms provided for them to let passengers off while they pass through smaller stations and use regional stations in the same track as an Intercity. Freight trains will prefer cargo routes and avoid stops at a passenger station platforms.
Two aspects are taken into account therefore: first, to choose the appropriate track or a suitable route based on the preference for certain destinations and secondly stopping depending on the combination of block and train type.

Moreover, particular train types can be completely excluded using block and route permissions, respectively.

Automatic selection of destinations

For every train running in automatic mode without a schedule or a destination set, Rocrail will search through all the routes to find a destination from the current block. Any destination block that meets all the requirements, such as permissions, train length, direction and so on is a possible destination. Rocrail then uses the the defined block type and the defined train type to classify the destination as either a preferred destination or an alternative destination. After processing all routes, Rocrail chooses a random destination from the list with preferred destinations. However, if the list with preferred destinations is empty, Rocrail chooses a random destination from the list with alternative destinations. In the latter case Rocrail also decides whether or not the train should not stop -when possible- in the destination block, regardless of the settings of the destination block.

Overview

The Table block and train types shows which combination of block type and train type is a preferred destination and which is an alternative destination. It also shows when Rocrail will use the wait option defined in the destination block, when a wait is forced and when a wait is overruled.

Table key

ColorMeaning
Green this combination is a best destination
Yellow this combination is a best destination when the train that previously entered the destination is another then the current train, otherwise it is an alternative destination
White this combination is an alternative destination

TextMeaning
settings the wait option of the destination block is followed
forced the train will wait in the destination block, regardless of settings
no text the train will not wait in the destination block when a next destination is free, regardless of settings

Note:

  • The turntable setting applies when the block properties contain a turntable ID, regardless of block type.

Details

Block Types

In addition to the train types mentioned below the type all obeys the wait settings in all kind of block. For trains of the types all and cleaning car all kinds of blocks are a preferred destination provided that the same train was not the last train entering this block.

Others

A universal type of block and the default in Rocrail. As a specific feature type other blocks for all train kinds are a preferential destination, provided that the same train was not the last train entering in this block. All types of trains with the exception of cleaning, will obey the waiting settings of the block.

Local

E. g., for secondary lines and their stations and smaller stations used by local trains. For trains of the types local and mixed this block is a preferential destination. Trains of the types local, mixed, light and regional obey the waiting settings of the block.

Intercity

E. g., for main lines used by intercity trains and other fast passenger trains and for dedicated rails in bigger central stations with platforms used by these kinds of trains only. This type of block is a preferred destination for trains of the same type only. Trains of this type and, in addition, of the type regional obey the waiting settings of the block.

Freight

E. g., for freight railways, freight yards and lines which are used by passenger trains occasionally. For trains of the types freight and mixed this type of block is a preferred destination. Trains of the types freight, mixed and light freight obey the waiting settings of the block.

Shunting

Especially for shunting yards and sidings. A preferred destination for trains of the type other only. Only trains of this type obey the waiting settings of the block. As a specific feature of this type of block trains are allowed to enter even if the block is electrically occupied. Special care must be taken to avoid the risk of accidents!

Turntable

As a special feature the block is a preferred destination for all types of trains provided that the same train was not the last train entering this block. In addition, all types of trains are forced to wait in the block. Independent of the selected block type the block receives the type turntable if a turntable ID is given.

Regional

E.g., for lines with regional passenger traffic and for smaller central stations with few rails and platforms which are shared by local trains, commuter trains and express trains. This block is a preferred destination for trains of the same type. Trains of the types local, intercity, light and regional obey the wait settings.

Light

For light railways and stations of light railways. Only trains of the same type regard this block as a preferred destination. The wait settings of the block are obeyed by both trains of the type local and light.

Light freight

E.g., for light railways with a predominant freight transportation and for freight yards of light railways. Only trains of the same type regard this block as a preferred destination. The wait settings of the block are obeyed by both trains of the type freight and light freight.

Post

For special rails and platforms used by specific trains as for example railway mail service. A preferred destinations for trains of the same type only. The wait settings are also obeyed by trains of the same type only.

Train Types

In addition to the preferential destinations mentioned in each case below blocks of the types other and turntable for all train types are a preferential destination, provided that the same train was not the last train entering the block.

Other

Server type=none

This train kind has blocks of the type shunting as a preferential destination, here the wait settings of the block are also obeyed. Used for, as an example, shunting engines.

Freight

Server type=goods

Blocks of the type freight are preferred by this type of trains. Here and, in addition, in blocks of the type light freight the waiting settings of the block are obeyed.

Local

Server type=local

Used for, as an example, commuter trains and local trains on main and secondary lines which are expected to stop at flag stops, stations of light railways and main stations. Blocks of the same type are a preferred destination. Here and, in addition, in blocks of the types regional and light the wait settings are obeyed.

Mixed

Server type=mixed

Blocks of the types local and freight are preferred destinations. The wait settings are obeyed in both local and freight blocks.

Cleaning

Server type=cleaning

This train type is accepted by all blocks and permits driving on and with it the cleaning of all blocks, as long as these are not occupied. As a specific feature of the cleaning car all block types are regarded as a preferential destination, provided that the same train was not the last train entering in this block. In this manner bigger arrangements and shadow railway stations can be also cleaned efficiently. If possible the wait settings of blocks are disregarded. This train kind is suitable especially for motor cleaning cars (rail vacuum cleaner etc.) which should finish their job within very short time.

  • The only way to avoid a cleaning type running in a block can be set in the Block Permissions.

All

Server type=all

Same as cleaning but the wait settings are obeyed in all block types. This type is suitable especially for cleaning cars running constantly in trains.

Intercity

Server type=ice

Used for, as an example, fast long-distance trains like intercity which should stop only in bigger (main) stations. Blocks of the same type are a preferential destination. Here and, in addition, in blocks of the type regional the wait settings of the block are obeyed.

Post

Server type=post

For railway mail services or other special trains which typically stop at certain places only, e.g., within a railway station. Blocks of the same type are regarded as a preferred destination. There the wait settings of the block are also obeyed.

Light

Server type=light

For the stopping trains which usually operate on light railways. Blocks of the same type are regarded as a preferred destination. Here and, in addition, in blocks of the types local and regional the wait settings of the block are obeyed.

Light Freight

Server type=lightgoods

Used for freight trains operating on light railways for example. Blocks of the same type are preferred destinations. The wait settings are obeyed in blocks of the types light freight and freight.

Regional

Server type=local

Used for, as an example, passenger trains in a regional transport system. Blocks of the same type are preferred destinations. Here and, in addition, in blocks of the types local and intercity the wait settings are obeyed.

Service

Server type=service

This train type is accepted by all blocks; all wait settings are obeyed.
