Change to ZIP Installer on Windows

Introduction

This page shows how a Rocrail ZIP file can be used to easily and quickly update an existing installation created with a setup file.

Note: Experienced Windows users know other ways or unzip to (almost) any place on their computer. This guide is intended for users who want a quick result and do not want to deal in detail with the ZIP installer and its advantages.

The following assumes that the original installation was carried out using the setup file with default settings and that in particular the installation path was not customized. But if so, some steps have to be adjusted to the individual settings.

Securing existing data

For example when changing computers.
You have to secure:
- workspace
which should include:
- plan file (standard is "plan.xml")
- locomotive pictures
and if available:
- extra locomotive file
- external scripts
- license file (lic.dat)
- own svg data

I would not save the settings in Rocrail and Rocview (rocrail.ini and rocview.ini), as they depend on the installation on the respective computer, but I would remember the settings (screenshots).

Preparation

  • End Rocrail.
  • Back up files: Copy (not move) the folder Rocrail from the Documents folder to another location, e.g. to another drive, USB stick etc. This step is optional. The update does not destroy any data. But to be on the safe side a backup is recommended.
  • Download a current ZIP file from the Daily Build website. Depending on the operating system version either Rocrail-WIN32.zip or Rocrail-WIN64.zip.

Update

Locate the downloaded ZIP file - here it was simply placed on the desktop.

ZIP file

Open the context menu of the file (right click on the file) and select the item Extract all….

Note: The following steps are described using the unpacker included in Windows. If third-party software for unpacking has been installed, it is the user's responsibility to perform equivalent operations with that software.
Context Menu

The following dialogue opens:

Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders dialogue

This dialogue shows the current location of the file in the field under Files are extracted to this folder:.
The checkmark at Show extracted files when complete should be set.
Instead of this folder, it has to be searched for the folder where Rocrail is currently installed. To do this click on the button Browse….

Another dialogue opens:

Select a destination dialogue

In this dialogue select the folder where Rocrail was installed. Normally this is the folder Rocrail to be found in Documents.
Select the folder as shown in the figure and click on Select Folder.

The destination folder is now referenced:

Dialogue Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders with changed destination folder

Then click on Extract.
The files are now extracted. This process may take a while, depending on the operating system settings, Windows Defender and computer performance. In the meantime, Windows will show the progress:

Progress graphic in More details view

After all the files are extracted, Windows will ask how to deal with files that already exist:

Dialogue Replace or skip files

In this dialogue, click on Replace the files in the destination.
This completes the update as such. Finally, a new link must be created.

Creating a desktop shortcut

If the extraction of the files was done with the above settings, the folder Rocrail was opened automatically1):

File desktoplink.cmd in the folder Documents\Rocrail

In this folder find the new file desktoplink.cmd2). A double click on it creates a valid shortcut and an icon with the name Rocview on the desktop. If a Windows Defender warning is displayed, see Windows Defender.

Rocview Desktop Icon

It is mandatory to start Rocrail using this new desktop icon! If there are still entries in the start menu these are from the old installation and have to be ignored or to be deleted.

Note: If the desktop shortcut cannot be created on the system with this procedure, the shortcut created in the Rocrail folder with the name Rocview (indicated by the icon shown above) must be copied manually to the desktop.
Tip: The shortcut can be pinned to the taskbar or to "Start", for example, if required.

Future updates

Future updates can be done as described in the Update section on the page Installing Rocrail on Windows.

1)
If not: Start the Windows Explorer (e.g. with the key combination <Windows+e>). Navigate to the Documents folder and open the folder Rocrail
2)
If the file extension ".cmd" is not displayed depending on the Windows settings. It is recommended to configure Windows to display file extensions.
